Calhoun County takes part in domestic violence roundup

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Calhoun County authorities are taking part in a national roundup of domestic violence suspects.

Sheriff Larry Amerson says early in his career as sheriff, domestic violence laws would not allow arrests in many cases, even if deputies could clearly see two black eyes on a woman's face. Now, those laws have changed. Amerson says as a result, his investigators make a domestic violence cases a priority.

"This year, so far, we've made eight arrests," said Amerson. "Good news is, we don't have a lot of domestic violence outstanding. It's something we put a priority on and our deputies are still out working on this now."

Amerson says he hopes the roundup sends a message that violence against a domestic partner will not be tolerated.
