BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Members of the Birmingham Police Department, Lawson State Community College and Birmingham Municipal Court came together on Wednesday to introduce a new educational program offered to inmates at the Birmingham City Jail.

The Transition Assistance Program, or TAP, is an extension of the GED partnership the jail has had for a little over a year.

Through the new program, inmates are offered classes that focus on reading, math and other social programs like Alcohol Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Domestic Violence and Sex Education classes.

"We know when people are here we have a captive audience," Birmingham Municipal Judge Andra Sparks said. "We're giving them some things to think about."

Sparks says for inmates who finish their GED he offers major incentives, like lessening fines that come with some of their crimes.

A Lawson staff member teaches the classes, which inmates have to qualify for.

Once they're released from jail, inmates will also have the option to continue their education by attending classes offered at the municipal court or at the Lawson State campus.
