BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -
A Pleasant Grove man was shot to death overnight by his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend, Jefferson County officials confirm.
The coroner's office has identified the victim as Kennis Rucker, 30. Family members said he went by "Kenny."
Chief Deputy Randy Christian said deputies responded to a report of shots being fired at a home in the 100 block of 3rd Avenue in the Docena area of Jefferson County around 1 a.m. Monday, Oct. 14.
Deputies found Rucker lying on the floor in the back bedroom of the home. Paramedics pronounced him dead on the scene, Christian said.
Investigators learned that Rucker had been visiting his girlfriend and her four-year-old daughter at the home.
The girlfriend's ex-boyfriend, 34-year-old Markeith Hall of Docena, showed up to the house and got into a fight with Rucker.
Authorities say Hall is also the father of the four-year-old girl, and at some point grabbed her and took her outside onto the front porch. Hall then fired shots through the door. The bullets struck Rucker, killing him.
After the shooting, Hall fled the scene in a white Toyota Avalon Avalon. He was taken into custody a little before 10 a.m. at his mother's house in the 400 block of 7th Street Docena.
The Jefferson County coroner removed Rucker's body, covered in a black tarp, around 5:45 a.m. Family members at the scene broke down and started crying when they saw the body being removed.
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office says Rucker's mother is a lieutenant with their office, so this case is tough for the whole department.
Hall is being held for questioning and has not yet been officially charged. Check back with this story for updates.
