GARDENING- It's fall and time to start worrying about your fall gardening! Bethany O'rear with the Alabama Coopertive extension agent joined us with some gardening advice. She discusses the agency's theory - Fall is for Planting - Right Plant, Right Place. She says fall is a great time for planting trees, shrubs, perennials because it gives the roots a chance to get established. But she says before planting, research what you plan to plant. Look at the function - what do you want the plant to do - screen, barrier, focal point, erosion control, noise and odor control. Aesthetically - what do I want the plant to look like - form, color, texture, Environmentally - what conditions does the plant need to grow?  What conditions do I have - sun vs. Shade, cold hardiness, heat tolerance, & drainage. For more information, come visit our Master Gardener Cooperative Extension booth  and ACES booth at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens Plant Sale - October 19th and 20th .  Lots of great plants and a wealth of information.

ASK THE DOCTOR- Questions about diabetes? Dr. Colleen Donohue, a family medicine physician at Brookwood Primary Care joined us to discuss preventing and managing diabetes. Dr. Donohue answered questions about preventing diabetes through lifestyle changes, including diet, exercise and annual physical exams. She also discussed how to manage the chronic condition and available treatment options, including insulin pumps, injections and healthy diet. Diabetes affects 25.8 million Americans (8.3% of the U.S. population). Among US residents, 18.8 million people are diagnosed each year, and 7 million people have diabetes and do not know it. The World Health Organization projects that diabetes deaths will double between 2005 and 2030. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, nontraumatic lower-limb amputations, and new cases of blindness among adults in the United States. It is also a major cause of heart disease and stroke. 80 Percent of Type 2 diabetes is preventable with lifestyle changes, including diet, exercise and annual physical exams. Some risk factors patients can control include obesity, inactive lifestyle and high blood pressure / cholesterol. Other risk factors like family history, increasing age and genetics are largely out of our control.
