Next two weeks busy for Jeffco Commission bankruptcy

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The next two weeks will be critical for Jefferson County's bankruptcy case.

On Wednesday, Commissioner David Carrington and county attorneys will meet with sewer creditors. They will re-negotiate their agreement with the county's bankruptcy plan.

Next week, representatives of bond rating companies will be in Birmingham. The county is looking to upgrade its low rating to get a better interest rate on refinancing almost $2-billion of debt.

"We want them to feel the energy. When we get the creditors down here, the rating agencies down here they say we weren't expecting this kind of city," said Carrington.

Carrington says they will showcase the Birmingham metro area to prove to the ratings agency there is plenty of potential for growth. Commissioners say without a lower interest rate, their plan to exit bankruptcy will not work.
