BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

A homeless man accused in a string of arson cases has accepted a plea deal.

In exchange for the deal, Anthony Weaver will testify against a former Birmingham police officer also charged in the same arson cases.

Weaver pleaded guilty to third degree burglary, conspiracy to commit arson, and second degree arson.

He will get 15 years for the Class "C" felonies and 20 years for the Class "B" felony. The sentences will run concurrently.

Because Weaver has three prior felony convictions, he could have gotten life in prison. In exchange for the lighter sentence, Weaver will testify against former police officer Jason Arnold.

Weaver's attorney, Charles Salvagio, says his client met Arnold on the streets and he feels his client got caught up in someone else's bad situation.

"He's a homeless guy and I've been very proud to represent him. I've been saying this all along but he's a victim in all of this. What he did was wrong but he's now taking responsibility for it. But I think a lot of it was brought on him," Salvagio said.

Weaver's sentencing is set for February 2014.

Arnold's trial was set to begin Oct. 7, but was delayed until Nov. 18.

Another suspect and former Birmingham police officer charged with arson, Curtis Thornton, was found guilty on several counts of arson. He is currently serving a 100 year prison sentence.
