HARTSELLE, AL (WAFF) -

The government shutdown has already directly impacted one North Alabama school district. Hartselle City Schools' entire fifth grade planned a field trip to Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge for Tuesday. But the refuge closed due to the shutdown.

District officials said timing was everything, and the timing couldn't have been worse for students and staff.

"We got ready just like normal," said Hartselle City Schools Superintendent Vic Wilson.

Wilson has a son in the fifth grade that had prepared for the field trip for weeks.

"My son was very excited about this field trip. He and I like to go camping," said Wilson. "He was going to stake out where we could go."

The district didn't want to cancel the field trip, and made several phone calls to try to salvage it. Those phone calls led them to the Morgan County Conservation Center. Wilson said it's not what they prepared for, but it's making the best of a situation that already has a lot of people flustered, mad, and upset.

"You just roll with the punches as they come to you," said Wilson.
