Football team fired up after bus blaze burns equipment

A local football team whose bus burst into flames on Saturday is now left with nothing.

Members of the team from Concordia College in Selma were headed to play a game against Miles College in Fairfield.

Everyone got out ok, but the fire destroyed thousands of dollars in equipment.

"It spooked a lot of us. Spooked the players, spooked the coaches," says sophomore Corner back, Troy Griggs.

He was riding on the bus when all of a sudden he heard, "two thumps."

Concordia's Head Coach Don Lee says the bus lost two tires and then caught on fire.

"Everybody's texting me 'coach, the bus is on fire.' So we whipped the first bus around and when we got back there where they were at, we were pulling kids off the bus and the bus was burnt and completely [in] flames."

"We got outa there pretty quickly," says Griggs.

The team lost roughly $90,000 dollars worth of football equipment, leaving them at the mercy of nearby schools willing to donate jerseys, pants and helmets.

"Just trying to get the equipment here," says Lee.

Players and coaches showed up bright and early for 5:30 practice just days after the bus fire. They say the fire may have destroyed their equipment, but it ignited the team's spirit.

"We didn't have no equipment and we're out there in tennis shoes working out and doing technique and fundamentals.  And that shows you right now, it's bringing the team together," says Lee.

"It really motivated us and motivated the coaches," says Griggs.

Griggs and his fellow teammates are ready to move forward while coaches hustle to make it happen.

"I'm praying we can play."

Concordia College plays West Alabama Thursday night at 7:00.

Coach Lee says West Alabama has already called offering any assistance his school can provide.
