Last week's Empowerment Week and 50 Years Forward celebrations brought leaders, media and celebrities from around the nation to our fair city. We came together in remembrance of those who have given so much in the Civil Rights movement and in celebration of the changes…the change of heart…that has allowed us to come together for the greater good. It was evidenced by the diverse crowds at events throughout the week, culminating with the unveiling of the monument to the four little girls who lost their lives 50 years ago and at the service at the 16th Street Baptist Church on Sunday.
The titling of the week's events using words like empowerment and forward set the tone for the week. To know how far you've come, you have to look back. Someone said to me…but how can you move forward if you keep talking about the past? What I've learned is, while you can't let the past define you… prevent you from growing…you can never forget your history or you'll repeat your mistakes.
It took a lot of time and resources to successfully plan and coordinate all of last week's events. I congratulate the Mayor, city government, our good corporate citizens and all of those who were involved in celebrating Birmingham 50 Years Forward.
