Businesses notified after sensitive info dumped on Montgomery curb
MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -
The sensitive documents once on the street in East Montgomery are gone--wheeled off by police shortly after they were found.
It's good news for two local companies who had information in a box there.
La Zona Rosa Mexican Cafe and Prattville based business Card Lock.
"We have those in a safe place and our goal at this point is to have those properly destroyed," says Lt. Regina Duckett with the Montgomery Police Department.
It's believed the documents belonged to Advanced Solutions, Inc., or ASI and are headed for the shredder.
And while employees of Card Lock and La Zona Rosa declined to comment on camera, folks at Card Lock say they don't believe their information was sensitive.
Employees with La Zona Rosa don't even remember doing business with Advanced Solutions, Inc.
It's still unclear how the boxes ended up on the street.
"We called multiple agencies yesterday to see if there was anything we could do. But at this time, there's no criminal charges, " says Duckett.
WSFA 12 News reached out to the U.S. Attorney's office to see if any laws prohibit businesses from releasing personal information or neglecting it.
They say there are no such laws.
WSFA 12 News also reached out to the Montgomery Sanitation Department after employees at nearby businesses said the pile sat there for two weeks.
"In our world it's a week that we've known about it," says Montgomery Director of Public Works, Chris Conway.
Conway says there are two reasons the pile wasn't picked up when sanitation workers realized it was there.
"There's not an active account at the address and then secondly that is a bulk pick-up, special handling so it would have needed to be pre-scheduled and arrangements made for payment of that special pick-up."
Conway says the sanitation department didn't know sensitive documents were in the pile.
He says the city will most likely charge the owners of the building where the pile was left with a public nuisance violation. It costs roughly $50 dollars for the sanitation department to make a special trip to pick up the trash.
The former owner of the building says the bank now owns it and the violation notice will be sent there.
If the trash is not taken care of within 10 days, the city can add a $150 administration fee.
