One month later, questions remain about gun laws

Gun owners still have questions about the new laws. Gun owners still have questions about the new laws.

Last month, new gun laws took effect in the state of Alabama, laws that brought on some big changes and caused some confusion for gun owners. Meanwhile, sheriffs in the Valley have been holding forums to educate the public about the laws so everyone understands what it means for them.

Keith McClendon was one of several who attended the gun law town hall meeting in Marshall County Monday evening. He's a gun-owning farmer who wants to know his rights.

"I'm just trying to find out what we are up against with the new law, pertaining to being on the road with a gun," he said. "We are just trying to find out the basics, what we can and can't do."

Sheriff Scott Walls held several forums during the month of August. He said attendance could range from forty to two hundred people depending on the area.

"Attendance has been good, the questions have been good," he said. "People are calming down."

But many still want answers to the frequently asked questions. Walls said he gets these questions the most at the forums and at his office.

"They want to know where can you carry a gun, what's concealed, what's not concealed," he said. "The open carry is an issue, and what's going to happen with that, and can you go on private property. There have been a lot of questions, and rightfully so. It's everyone's Second Amendment right."

A right that McClendon wanted to make sure he's well versed on in our state.  He said it's good that sheriffs are teaching citizens the do's and dont's when it comes to weapons and the new laws.

"It's like your kid, if you teach them and teach them well, then they understand the law and it goes a long ways."

There will be one last gun forum meeting in Marshall County.  It will be held tomorrow at 5 p.m. at Brindlee Mountain High school in the cafeteria.
