Shelby County School officials confirm in a press release that the Helena Middle School soccer program will not be eliminated for the coming school year.

Some Shelby County parents will meet with officials Monday at 6:30 p.m. to talk about the decision.

Parents say they got an email a week before school started and that is how they found out the program had been cut. The move left students disappointed because now they will have to sit out this season.

In an email from Helena Middle School Athletic Director Ryan Brewer sent Aug. 20, the program was going to be cut due to lack of a coach, long travel distances to play games, and few middle school programs in the area. Brewer added in the email that there are club teams in the area and hopes students can join those as an alternative.

Some parents called foul. They wanted to see soccer get the same support as other sports like football and baseball.

"I was so infuriated that I wasn't going to be able to play soccer, because I've been wanting to for a really long time for the school," said student Justin Ritondo.

"Very disappointed. I never dreamed it would be eliminated. There's a lot of kids around here that play soccer and it's a very important sport," said Cecilia Ritondo, Justin's mother.

Helena Middle School officials and parents will meet tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the school's gym to voice their concerns about talk about options.

Shelby County Schools say in the most recent press release that the search for a new soccer coach will begin immediately.
