JASPER, AL (WBRC) -

A little girl attacked Friday night by a dog in Jasper remains in critical condition at Children's of Alabama Hospital.

Neighbors say they found the little girl, who is around 5 or 6 years old,  in a ditch after hearing her screams. It happened at approximately 7 p.m. on Preston Avenue.

Leconyea Duncan said she found the child balled up and bleeding. Another neighbor said that the dog got loose from a chain and attacked the girl.

Someone tried to beat the dog off of the child but that didn't work. The same person then got a gun and fired into the air, which finally made the dog stop and run away.

The attack left the child with significant head injuries. She was flown to Children's of Alabama for treatment. Authorities have not released her name.
