BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Jefferson County Commission President David Carrington announced Saturday he will seek a second term on the commission.

The former Vestavia Hills City Council President was elected in 2010 and chosen by his peers to head the five-member county commission during a tumultuous four-year term.

Carrington led the commission that decided to file what was at the time the largest Chapter 9 municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history, and to close Cooper Green Hospital and convert it into a healthcare clinic.

Both moves have been and continue to be controversial among some detractors who claim the plan to exit Ch. 9 is doomed to failure because of high interest rates and higher sewer rates, and by those who claim Cooper Green's conversion has left some low-income patients without affordable or reliable healthcare options.

Carrington and his usual 4-1 voting bloc have consistently defended both decisions as tough choices made with the county's long-term health and economic development in mind. Carrington made the announcement via Twitter saying, "Much has been accomplished; still more to do."

A very humid air mass remains parked over Alabama Wednesday night and this will lead to some more patchy fog for the start of the day Thursday. I do think we will see a better coverage of scattered storms.
