Editorial: Social media abuse

The following is an editorial from FOX6 WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, first aired on Tuesday, August 20...

Social media…Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, Pinterest and Vine…so many ways to connect.

Many use these communication tools in the best possible ways, reconnecting with old friends while staying in touch with new ones anywhere in the world; capturing special moments in photos and videos; staying on top of current events, news and weather; learning and developing new skills…all good.

But there are the abusers, unfortunately too many, who use social media as vehicles to vent, what seems to be, pent up-anger and frustration, using inappropriate language and saying things they wouldn't have the courage to express in person, often blurring the line between fact and fiction.

Social media, texts, emails have opened up a whole new world of accepted, even encouraged, anti-social behavior. All too often, common courtesy and decency have taken a back seat in these new forms of communication.

Being connected, staying connected in this big, sometimes scary, world is important to most of us. We have, at our finger-tips, so many ways to express ourselves. I think it's important to pause, before hitting send, to review the words or photos we are about to share with the world to make sure they represent us well now and for the long-haul. Remember you can never really delete a sent message.

What do you think?
