NAACP honors foot soldiers in Birmingham

The Birmingham Metro NAACP chapter continues its year-long celebration of the civil rights movement by honoring foot soldiers. An event was held at First Baptist Church Graymont on Sunday.

NAACP President Hezekiah Jackson says without the foot soldiers from 1963, there would not be a Civil Rights Movement. Many of the foot soldiers were school-age kids when they took to the streets of Birmingham to fight for their freedom.

"We want them to know that we appreciate them. We appreciate the role that they played and for them to know that we are grateful for what they've done and we recognize that we stand on their shoulders. So taking a few moments to tell them thank you I think is long overdue," said Jackson.

The 21st century foot soldiers were also honored for their roles in continuing what was started back in 1963.
