Cullman Co. schools superintendent to discuss prayer caravan

CULLMAN, AL (WAFF) -

The superintendent of Cullman County schools will address the controversy surrounding a prayer caravan on Tuesday.

Superintendent Billy Coleman said the school district will go forward with the caravan scheduled for Saturday.

Coleman will hold a news conference on Tuesday to answer any questions about the caravan and address allegations that it's unconstitutional. The prayer caravan has been given much attention from both sides of the issue.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation claimed the prayer caravan is unconstitutional and has requested the school district to cancel it, but Coleman is not budging. He and the school board said they can carry on with the caravan because it is not a school-sponsored event. The foundation, which is a watchdog group based in Wisconsin, disagreed. They said they'll send people to observe the caravan and document any possible violations.

Coleman will address the foundation's accusations at the Cullman County Chamber of Commerce Tuesday at 2 p.m.

WAFF 48 News will have a crew on the scene, and the announcement will be streamed online at WAFF.com.

As Hurricane Maria continues to move north across the Caribbean toward the East Coast, an area of low pressure moves out of the western U.S., leaving an area of high pressure in control of the Southeast weather bringing only a few afternoon and early evening showers and thunderstorms with more hot, muggy temperatures.
