BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Women across the world are coming together in honor of World Breastfeeding Week.

Dozens of Birmingham-area mothers and their littles ones gathered for a support group meeting at UAB.

Organizers say the U.S. is behind most of the world when it comes to breastfeeding and Alabama falls behind national statistics. But participants in Monday's meeting say breastfeeding is one of the best things a mother can do for her newborn.

Officials also say it helps a mother tremendously when they have the support of the baby's father and grandmothers.

Support group meeting will be held Mondays from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the first floor media room of UAB Highlands, located at 1201 11th Ave. S. Moms, children and support persons are welcome and should bring lunch. Parking is free and drinks and snacks will be provided. For more information about the meetings, please email sjedwards@uab.edu.
