Tax hike causing frustration

Tax hikes on gasoline, cigarettes and computer software services went into effect Wednesday, and caused frustration among several people.

Gas went up $.03 to $.24 cents a gallon. The cigarette tax jumped one dollar per pack to $3.51. That pushed the price for many cigarettes to more than $9.

The tax is part of the transportation finance bill approved by legislators over the veto of Gov. Deval Patrick.

Computer software services were also to begin charging 6.25 percent sales tax.

Rebecca Cote, of Ware, said she was seriously considering quitting smoking, "This is getting ridiculous. Every time you turn around... it's, they want, they want to tax something else, and they're always taxing cigarettes."

Many people appeared to be unaware of the tax hike going into effect Wednesday. Some convenience store clerks said many of their customers were very irate, especially about the extra dollar for cigarettes.
