The first case of West Nile Virus for Alabama in 2013 has been confirmed in Coffee County.

The Alabama Department of Public Health has confirmed one case of the West Nile Virus in Alabama. It is also examining confirmed cases of Eastern equine encephalitis, better known as EEE, in horses.

ADPH says WNV can cause an asymptomatic infection, a mild or moderate flu-like illness, or neurological diseases such as encephalitis or meningitis. Approximately 80 percent of people bitten will show no signs or symptoms of the virus.

Residents should be aware that mosquitoes in any county in Alabama may be carrying the virus or other mosquito-borne diseases.

To protect against mosquitoes make sure you use repellants with DEET, dress appropriately including loose fitting clothing, drain or dump containers with standing water and stay indoors at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most prevalent.

There were a total of 62 cases of WNV confirmed in Alabama in 2012.
