After two tragic, water-related deaths in west Alabama, water safety experts have some important reminders and they deal with swimmers and non-swimmers alike.
The Tuscaloosa Police Department's Lake Patrol says they cannot stress enough the importance of life jackets. It is the law for children eight and under to always have on their life jacket when they are in a boat, but the lake patrol says everyone in the boat needs to keep their life jacket on.
You may be an excellent swimmer, but if you somehow fall out of the boat and hit your head or become injured, the life jacket is necessary to save your life. The lake patrol says life jackets are not just for when you are in the boat or planning to swim.
For boaters, something else the lake patrol stresses is to stay on the right side of the lake, just like driving a car. If you are coming around a curve, and you're on the left side, that can be a major cause of accidents.
