SANDUSKY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

One family was in for a big surprise Thursday when they went to Cedar Point.

The family of Gunnery Sgt. Jason Cooper wasn't expecting him home until March of next year. Sgt. Cooper has been in the Marine Corps. For 18 years, and had been serving in Bahrain since February.

Cooper says he always plans some kind of surprise when he comes home, but never anything this big.

"There's only one person that had any idea that I'm in the United States as of 11 this morning," he said. "This is the first time I've ever done anything like this. I'm extremely excited!"

Cooper's wife and three children were brought to Cedar Point for what they thought was going to be an American heroes' tribute. A message from Cooper played on screen before he showed up behind them.

"I didn't have my glasses on," said Cooper's wife Lisa. "I was kind of squinting, thinking, ‘Oh my gosh, is that really him?'"

Welcome home Sgt. Cooper!
