ST. CLAIR COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

A son, mother and grandmother all died in a house fire in the Cook Springs area early Wednesday morning.

The St. Clair County Coroner's office identified the victims as Thomas Lee Deviller, Jr., 6, his mother Patricia Bressett, 39, and grandmother Grace Deviller, 68.

The father, Thomas Lee Deviller, and another son, 9-year-old Joseph, escaped from the burning home and survived. They were unable to save the rest of their family members.

The fire started around 1 a.m. Wednesday and was fully engulfed by the time firefighters got to the scene.

Doug Smith lives down the road from the family and is a former volunteer firefighter. He reponded to the blaze when he heard the call go out over the radio.

"When I got there the scene was fully involved, looked like it had already collapsed to the ground," Smith said.

Smith said this isn't the first fatal fire he's responded to, but it didn't make seeing it any easier.

"It's never easy to deal with something like that, especially when you're looking at the families and you don't know what to tell them. You wanna tell them something, but you don't know what to tell them, it's very hard," he said.

The state fire marshal's office is still investigating the cause of the fire.
