TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) -

The city of Tuscaloosa wants more people to come downtown, and some city leaders believe a valet parking service may encourage people to do just that.

The city's transportation director says there's a perception there aren't enough spaces to park in downtown. She's says that's not the case.

A total of 2,600 on-street parking spaces are available, but drivers aren't using all of them. One of the ways to fix that could include handing your keys over to a valet parking service.

The city council is considering an ordinance allowing valet parking.

"It would be a great asset to downtown Tuscaloosa," Tera Tubbs, director of the Tuscaloosa Transportation Department, said.

Tubbs presented the idea to councilors Tuesday. She says valet parking could free up parking on downtown's busiest streets.

"What it does is allow us to use parking places off the beaten path, that are not utilized during the same hours valet parking companies want to provide those services," Tubbs explained.

The ordinance would allow companies to apply for a license to provide valet parking. Those cars could be parked in open city spaces or designated lots.

Most folks Fox6 spoke to aren't sold on the idea of valet parking here.

"I'm not sure it would work here. Maybe on game days if out-of-towners would be willing to hand their keys off," Anthony Reinhoel said.

So far, no company has come forward offering valet parking.

The city council could vote on a valet parking plan sometime within the next two weeks.
