A prominent Tuscaloosa businessman is in a coma after being attacked outside of a concert venue in New York state.
Jason McNeil had just left a Kid Rock concert near Buffalo, New York, when police say he was badly beaten. Now, his friends are working to raise money for his recovery.
Blake Corder says his close friend McNeil didn't deserve to be knocked out after the July 5 concert. McNeil is in critical condition at a Buffalo hospital.
"It's still kinda surreal. I've spoken to his wife and some of his family members in New York and the whole thing has been surreal for everyong. It seems to be pointless and we just can't wrap our minds around it," Corder said.
According to New York authorities, Craig Lawson of Ontario, Canada, punched McNeil in the face, knocking him unconscious. Lawson is charged with third degree assault.
Since the incident, some of McNeil's family and friends have set up a Give Forward site to collect donations for McNeil's medical expenses. So far, people have donated more than $16,000 as of 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Corder says McNeil is a good guy and would help anyone. He says the family just needs prayers right now.
"If he were here, he would say he doesn't need your help because that's the type of guy he is. But he does need our help. For the most part, he needs our prayers and just our thoughts. And for us to be with his family while he struggles," Corder said.
