VESTAVIA HILLS, AL (WBRC) -

In two weeks Vestavia Hills city leaders hope to finalize their deal to for a spot for city hall. The city plans to purchase two pieces of property off of U.S. 31.

The old city hall has serviced the city of decades, but as the city has grown so have the demands on the building. The facility is limited, overcrowded and few parking spaces. The city fire and police departments are also housed at city hall.

Earlier, the city was looking at purchasing space at the Vestavia Center shopping area. But eventually city leaders rejected the idea because of the difficulty of fitting city departments in the vacant store space at the shopping center.

The city is now looking to purchase the old Food World grocery store behind Red Lobster off of Highway 31 for a reported $1.5 million. The city wants to buy the old Joe's Ranch House for another $825,000. The Food World store would provide about 30,000 square feet for a new city hall.

"It expands our city hall. We are no longer a small city. We are the third largest in Jefferson County. We are the 13th largest in the state of Alabama and city hall is overcrowded. We need to find a way to expand," Vestavia Hills Mayor "Butch" Zaragoza said.

The mayor hopes to wrap up the deal over the next two weeks. The cost of building a new city hall is estimated to be about $14 million.

Chick-Fil-A is interested in the old city hall for a new restaurant.
