Weather affects Lake Martin holiday

The stormy weather hasn't been a convenient partner for Becca Hepburn's convenience store in Eclectic near Lake Martin.

"We're busy but not as busy we normally would be," said Hepburn.

So far it's been a mixed bag at her business. Gasoline sales are down 20% compared to this time last year but groceries are up.

"I think a lot of people are staying at home and just chilling," said Hepburn.

Martha James had it all mapped out this weekend; a little bit of skiing, scuba diving and swimming. James ended up settling for less.

"We couldn't do it all because of the rain but we still got to cook out and see some fireworks but not at Lake Martin," said James.

Bill Major of Atlanta, Georgia, took a chance by taking his 21-foot decker out in the lake.

"Well, obviously we won't stay long if it starts lightening or if the wind picks up but we're here for the 4 day week and plan to make the best of it," said Major.

Good weather or bad weather vacationers say the bottom line for them is this is the holiday weekend and they're here to enjoy their 'independence.'

The Lake Martin fireworks are set for tonight (Friday), rescheduled from last night due to the rain.
