SHELBY COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

Alabama law enforcement will be pulling extra shifts this week to make sure people are safe on the road. The Shelby County Sheriff's Office has even announced two planned traffic safety checkpoints over the Fourth of July holiday.

"We tend to get a peak of people driving under the influence," State Trooper Captain Curtis Summerville said.

And Summerville says more people will be on the roadways, which is why law enforcement will be out in force on the Fourth of July holiday and through the weekend.

"If you go out and drink get a designated driver, get a place to stay, have a plan, put it in action. We don't want to arrest you," Summerville said.

But he says they will and law enforcement will be out looking for drivers breaking the law behind the wheel. The Shelby County Sheriff's Office will have two checkpoints this weekend.

They're even telling people when and where. Sheriff Chris Curry says the July Fourth holiday weekend is often the deadliest time of the year to be on the road, with more traffic fatalities and alcohol related accidents than any other time of the year.

And that's why Celeste Butler says she chooses to stay off the road altogether on holidays. She knows people are mixing in alcohol with their celebrations.

"Definitely over the holiday weekends, especially when there are big cookouts. It's very dangerous to be out," Butler said.

She and other drivers FOX6 News spoke to were happy to hear about the planned checkpoints. But Gene Akins says he wishes they would be a surprise.

"I would rather it be random where people don't know because if people know where, they avoid these checkpoints," Akins said.

There may be some other checkpoints but here are the times and locations for those in Shelby County:

The first is on Saturday from 1 a.m to 3 a.m. on Cahaba Beach Road near Highway 280.

And the other will be on Sunday from 1 a.m to 3 a.m. on Highway 119 near Shelby County Highway 22.

The deputies will be in uniform and in marked patrol cars.
