ALDOT reports that there were 73 percent more traffic fatalities in June than there were in May.

According to preliminary data, half of those killed in June were not wearing seatbelts. There were 57 deaths in total compared to 33 in May. Fifty-one of those people were in vehicles with seatbelts, but 26 were not wearing any restraints.

"As we move into this Fourth of July travel period, people need to be reminded that using seat belts and proper child restraints are key factors that help save lives on our highways," ALDOT Director John Cooper said in a press release.

To date, 248 people have been killed in traffic accidents. Nearly have of those fatalities were not wearing seat belts when they were available.
