Opelika shooting leaves man in serious condition

OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) -

"I didn't know what was going on."

Sylvia Peagler and her daughter were at their home off South 4th street in Opelika watching TV Thursday evening when suddenly they heard gun shots.

"I opened my door and the neighbors across the street were asking us to call 911. So I went to call 911 and the rescue squad came and found that a young man had been shot," says Peagler.

Authorities responded to the scene around 8 p.m. and found the victim, a man from Opelika in his late 30s, outside a home with multiple gunshot wounds.

He was rushed to the East Alabama Medical Center where he is currently in serious condition.

"I went a got my umbrella and put it over him. The young man who did the shooting did try to do CPR on the man during that time," explains Peagler

No arrests have been made as of now, but one man is in questioning.

According to Sergeant Robert Cook with the Opelika Police Department, they have not been able to speak with the victim due to his injuries.

Anyone with information is encouraged to should call the OPD Investigative Services Division at (334) 705-5220 or the secret witness hotline at (334)705-8665.
