Some big detours are ahead for those who travel through part of Talladega County.
A section of Highway 21 will be shut down for repairs next month just south of the city of Talladega by Whiting Road. The project is in response to the development of several sinkholes.
Resident Barbara Moore can't stop worrying about the section of Highway 21 where she lives. More specifically, she's worried about the sinkholes underneath it, which have already been patched up repeatedly.
"I'm concerned that they've been working on it for such a long time, and it continues to sink and with all of the rain that we've been having, and also because I know of so many sinkholes that happen in the area," Moore said.
That's why the state plans to shut down all four lanes of Highway 21 to repair the problem. It's a main artery between Talladega and Sylacauga, and officials will detour traffic. Though there are sure to be traffic headaches, Moore is taking a practical approach to the shutdown.
"So I would think the inconvenience of having the highway shut down would be a smaller inconvenience than falling into a sinkhole," Moore said.
The roadwork is expected to begin in late July and be completed in three to five weeks. A spokesperson for ALDOT says the problem is so serious, they declared the project an emergency.
Ironically, the Talladega County EMA is located in the same area. Workers expect to issues getting to work, but they're ready if anything changes.
"In the event that it does, you know, keep us from coming to our facility here, then we have an alternate EOC set up at the Talladega Superspeedway," Scott Murphree with the Talladega County EMA said.
The department even has a sinkhole drill planned for mid-July.
ALDOT says it will post detour signs for the project in Talladega County before work begins. In a press release, ALDOT states that traffic from Talladega going south will be County Road 203 (Plant Road) to State Route 235 to U.S. 280 to State Route 21 south of Sylacauga. Northbound traffic on State Route 21 would take U.S. 280 to Childersburg to State Route 235 to County Road 203 to Talladega.
ALDOT also says they will announce a start date about a week before the roadwork begins so keep up to date with the latest on MyFoxAl.com.
