(RNN) – Famed children's author Maurice Sendak was honored by Google with an animated doodle to celebrate what would have been his 85th birthday.

Sendak rose to fame in the 1960s after writing Where the Wild Things Are. He also wrote the award-winning Outside Over There and illustrated Little Bear, which spawned a movie and TV show.

His book In the Night Kitchen garnered much hype and controversy due to illustrations depicting the main character, Mickey, naked and cooks who resemble Adolf Hitler trying to cook Mickey in their oven. Sendak, who was Jewish, said the comparisons were intended as an allegory to the Holocaust.

Google's doodle starts with Max's trip in Where the Wild Things Are, continues through the story of In the Night Kitchen and finishes with a recreation of the birthday party from Bumble-Ardy, Sendak's last book.

All of the characters shown in the doodle converge at the end for the celebration and present Sendak with a cake.

Sendak was born June 10, 1928, in Brooklyn, NY, and died May 8, 2012, after suffering a stroke. One of Sendak's last public appearances was a two-part interview on Comedy Central's The Colbert Report, where he reviewed and endorsed host Stephen Colbert's children's book I Am A Pole (And So Can You).
