The following is an editorial from FOX6 WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, first aired on Thursday, June 6:
A couple of weeks ago, as the citizens of Moore, Okla. were digging through the ruins of their homes to salvage whatever they could, FOX6 asked for your help. And, boy did you come through! With the Salvation Army as a partner, we decided to do a water collection drive that would be delivered by the Salvation Army to their counterparts in Oklahoma City. Our goal was to fill a tractor trailer with water.
The effort began at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21 and by early the next morning one truck was full and because cases of water were continuing to fill the parking lot, another truck was brought in to handle all of the generous donations. Folks came to Brookwood Mall from all over the viewing area to bring their gifts of water. Donations ranged in size from gallon jugs and six packs of water to cases and pallets of water. Several area businesses gave multiple pallets of water. We got donations of cash and gift cards as well.
Not only did folks bring their gifts of water but also many shared stories, some tearfully, of their experiences during the April tornadoes of two years ago. When thanked, many made comments like, "This is the least I can do…I remember how I felt two years ago." Still others gave of their time to help load the water onto the trucks. Within just 24 hours we had filled both trucks.
We would like to thank the Salvation Army, always there in time of need, and also would to thank Joe Piper, Inc. and My Way Transportation whose generosity made the transportation of the water possible. And to you, the good, good people of Alabama. Although we have not been surprised by your generosity, we have been overwhelmed.
Thank you!
