The following comments were generated from an editorial by FOX6 WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, which first aired on Tuesday, May 28, 2013:
The A.G. Gaston Boys and Girls Club is a wonderful community entity. It has done great things for children that don't have much and it has done great things for my family as well. They have gone above and beyond the call of duty and is an excellent provider for our community's children.
For the first time ever, I truly enjoyed Lou's Editorial piece on A.G. Gaston. I sensed her comments were heartfelt and genuine. I sincerely appreciate the effort that was put into the editorial, and I look forward to watching the story air on FOX6 this Thursday. (I've already set my DVR). Thank you FOX for stepping out of the box and giving recognition to this truly deserving man!
In 1976 I became an Employee of US Steel. I was assigned to the "Ore Conditioning Plant" in Wenonah/Roosevelt City. I was a Kid and heard many stories about the "old days" from my senior supervisors. They were always positive about Mr. Gaston being at the plant doors every day selling them sandwiches. White, black, it didn't matter Mr. Gaston was always there. Everyone who worked there depended on Mr. Gaston being at the gates, at the ore mines!
It was about trust, not race.
I am a deputy sheriff now. Mr. Gaston's lesson remains with me to this day. Honor, trust, Integrity. Same then as today!
I never met him but I honor him!
Thank you for your interest in this week's editorial. We look forward to hearing more comments from you on future issues.
