New Yorker driving PA car busted on OH Turnpike with Khat

ERIE COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A New Yorker is facing a felony drug charge after Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers seized three bags of Khat during a stop on the Ohio Turnpike in Erie County Friday.

Troopers stopped a 2013 Nissan Altima with Pennsylvania registration for a speed violation on the Ohio Turnpike near mile post 120 at 5:21 p.m. Upon approaching the vehicle, troopers detected an odor of burnt marijuana.

A probable cause search revealed three plastic bags containing Khat, weighing 141 grams, worth approximately $3,000.

Khat is a flowering evergreen shrub native to East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. The fresh leaves, twigs and shoots of the Khat shrub are chewed like tobacco and are considered a controlled substance.

The driver, Mustafa Almansoori, 23, of Brooklyn, NY, was incarcerated in the Erie County Jail. Almansoori has been charged with drug possession, which is a third-degree felony.
