(RNN) – When faced with a cleaver-wielding killer who'd just murdered someone, what would you do?
For Ingrid Loyau-Kennet, the answer was obvious.
Instead of running for her life, she engaged him in conversation, possibly saving lives in the process.
"I know it's big today, but for me, it's a regular guy. Just a bit upset," said Loyau-Kennett, who talked to the men who allegedly murdered a British soldier and left him dead in the street.
"I could see a revolver, a butcher's knife … blood all over him. And I thought 'What the heck? What happened here?'" she told the British morning show Daybreak.
She hopped off the bus she was riding when she saw the scene, assuming the body in the road was the victim of a car accident. She ran over to help and says she was told by one of the men, "Don't touch. I killed him."
She says the man told her he killed him because, as a British soldier, he had harmed Muslims.
"I said ‘What would you like?' I tried to make him talk about what he felt," she said.
Loyua-Kennet is not a hostage negotiator. She's a former teacher.
And in spite of the fact that she stood feet from the soldier's body, Loyau-Kennet said she wasn't intimidated or afraid for her safety.
"Better me [harmed] than a child … there were mothers with children around," she said. "It was more important that I talked to him and asked him what he wanted … because I thought ‘Well, usually, they want something.'"
A photo of the confrontation has circulated on Twitter.
Then, as quickly as the conversation began, it ended. Loyau-Kennet jumped back on the bus and went home.
"I saw the bus moving and I thought ‘Ahh, it's going to leave without me.' So I asked the guy for the last time ‘Is there anything I can do?'"
Police arrived and the two attackers were eventually shot. They are at area hospitals, under heavy guard.
The soldier, 25-year-old Lee Rigby, was a husband and father of a 2-year-old. He was off-duty at the time of the attack, which has been deemed an act of terrorism.
