For the third time in four years, the VSU Lady Blazers softball team is going back to the National Tournament after beating conference foe Alabama-Huntsville in the South Super Regionals Finals.
The Lady Blazers won game one of the best-of-three series 5-3 on Friday night. In game two, UAH Mallory McNeal knocked a chopper back up the middle in the 7th inning which scored Mary Kelley to not only give the Lady Chargers a 5-4 game two victory but also forced a deciding game three.
The Blazers sent eight base runners across home plate in game three of the Super Regional Championship series, and each one scored with two outs. The eight runs, along with a strong pitching performance by Hanna Lythberg, were enough to secure a spot in the National Championship Tournament after a 8-3 victory.
"They just fight. These girls, they play hard for 7 innings. That's been our motto all year. You gotta play 7 innings to win a ball game. They just don't quit. There's no quit to them. We graduated 7 girls and nobody gave us a fighting chance and they worked hard all year so you gotta give it to them," said head coach Thomas Macera.
Senior Courtney Albritton added "Last year we did it for the seniors. This year nobody thought we were going to do it so its good to know that we're still going to be there."
Lady Blazers will now play Molloy on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in the opening round of the National Tournament in Salem, Virginia.
