Proposed property tax passes AL state legislature

AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -

The proposed property tax that will fund the creation of a new state-of-the-art high school in Auburn will now be left to the citizen's vote.

"We're probably looking at an election not before September. Sometime this fall, but September at the earliest," says David Dorton, Director of Public Affairs for Auburn.

Auburn City Schools brought their plan to the City Council last December.

We spoke to Superintendent Dr. Karen DeLano by telephone Friday afternoon.

She says this school is an immediate need with growth and is elated the legislature will leave the decision up to resident voters.

"The school system tells us that state funding has kind of lacked behind growth as far as state funding based on enrollment, but hasn't really kept up with enrollment," explains Dorton. "The school board came to the council saying they needed some help."

If the increase in property taxes by nine mills should pass, it would fund the high school's price tag of nearly $80 million.

Another $17 million has been requested to update facilities at current schools.

The increase to 14 mills in school property tax means citizens would pay around $1.40 per $100 of the assessed property.

"The goal is to keep that quality of the school system that has helped Auburn be a dynamic community and an education community," says Dorton.

We continue to see increasing clouds through tonight with overnight lows early tomorrow morning in the 32-39 degree range as the next rain maker approaches later in the day. The first rain may approach during the pre-dawn hours in Northwest Alabama but these will only be a few isolated showers. An area of...More >>
