In my editorial on Tuesday I chided our legislators for being the last state to pass a no-brainer bill legalizing home brewing.
Today I want to challenge them to be one of the first states to pass another no-brainer; changing the blood alcohol content level constituting drunk driving from .08 to .05.
This week the National Transportation Safety Board recommended that change and for good reasons.
Each year, nearly 10,000 people die in alcohol-related traffic accidents.
Each year, roughly 4 million people admit to driving while under the influence of alcohol.
The U.S. is one of only a handful of countries that have the BAC set this high.
Depending on your age, weight, sex and tolerance, you could have as many as 3 to 4 drinks in an hour and only reach .05 BAC.
Just as the home brewing law is about our rights, so would be a .05 BAC law is about our right not to be killed by a drunk driver.
It would be impossible to get a bill in this session of the legislature, but it could be the first item on the docket come January 2014.
