The following is an editorial from FOX6 WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, first aired on Tuesday, May 14:
Are you a peacemaker? It's a question I often ask myself. Am I engaged in creating solutions or in creating problems for others to solve? Are my words and actions making things better or worse?
In 1942 Rotary International adopted a creed that became their standard for business management ethics. They called the 4-Way Test and it asks four questions. They could be the same questions St. Peter asks us at the Pearly Gates, while insisting we look him in the eyes.
The questions are: is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all?
What if the 4-Way Test was used to hold members of Congress accountable for the legislation they sponsor and for their voting record? We would all, collectively, benefit if any one of the tenets of the test was embraced by our political leaders.
Well, whether it's about making a business or personal decision and acting on that decision, or about attempting to influence others who are in that process; perhaps we should first ask if it passes the 4-Way Test.
What do you think?
