BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Birmingham Police are investigating the case of a pedestrian hit in the Smithfield community.

Police have not released the victim's condition or identity. The incident happened around 5:45 p.m. Friday near Parker High School.

Witnesses tell FOX6 News that a woman was gettingout of a white SUV when she was struck by another vehicle. They add that the driver didn't stop and left the scene. However, this information has not been confirmed by police.

Community members say they are very upset about the hit and run.

"We live in the neighborhood and we have to reach out to each other and we try to be neighbors and love each other, and in a way protect each other. But I hope the lady that was involved in this, I hope she be alright," Mary Thomas said.

The incident comes on the eve of a prayer walk in the community Saturday, May 11.
