BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Loaded guns have also been found at the Birmingham Shuttlesworth International Airport.

FOX6 News has learned that in April, police found two loaded guns in carry on bags at the airport. To date in 2013, TSA says they've found six guns and in 2012, they confiscated 16 guns.

Jonathan Allen, Public Affairs Manager with the TSA, says in almost all of these cases passengers simply forget they have a gun in their bag.

In April, a loaded 9MM and a loaded .380 were discovered by TSA agents. In both cases, the passengers did not face criminal charges, but the civil penalties in these cases are massive.

The TSA says typical fines range from $3,000 for an unloaded gun and $7,500 for a loaded gun. Allen says passengers should always know the rules. You may travel with firearms in checked baggage but they must be declared. The firearm must also be unloaded, packed in a hard case and seperate from ammunition.

More than 1,500 firearms are discovered by TSA agents nationwide, so make sure you know the rules for the next time you fly.
