Richt expects SOWEGA impact on UGA in 2013

It may be hard to believe, but we're through spring football practice and the countdown to the opening week of college football is on.

Before that gets started, Georgia head coach Mark Richt making his tour around Bulldog Country.

Dawgs head basketball coach Mark Fox joining Richt in Tifton for UGA Day Wednesday night.

But Southwest Georgia is not an unfamiliar spot for the UGA head coach.

Many of the players Richt expects major impacts from this season hail from the area.

Richt says Dawg fans should get used to seeing former Mitchell County star Justin Scott-Wesley, former TCC Yellow Jacket Ray Drew, and Valdosta Wildcat Jay Rome making plays in the red and black.

But he says two other south Georgia standouts will be called upon to be team leaders, including Malcolm Mitchell, who will solely play wideout after a short stint at defensive back in 2012.

"I think we're going to put him at full time receiver," Richt said Wednesday. "Really let him become a master at that position."

The other: Josh Harvey-Clemons, who Richt says will become a defensive starter in 2013.

"Josh Harvey-Clemons is a guy we expect a lot out of. We have him at our number one strong safety position," he says. "And he'll probably have a shot at playing some nickelback position as well."

Richt will need a big impact from all of his Southwest Georgia standouts.

The Dawgs open the 2013 with a brutal stretch, beginning at Clemson August 31.
