National Conference of Black Mayors to join Civil Rights anniversary

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Mayors from around the globe are taking part in Birmingham's commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement.

It was announced today with Akira Yoshinari, mayor of Hitachi, Japan, that Mayor Bell has been named as the International Committee Chairman of the National Conference of Black Mayors.

The group also announced that it will participate in the city's 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement in September 2013.

Birmingham will host a panel discussion during the city's empowerment week, September 11-15.

The week will seek to engage, educate and empower through speeches, panel discussions, community service, educational activities, and arts and culture.

Just some of the international mayors scheduled to attend include mayors from Nigeria, Colombia, Kingston, Jamaica, and Dublin, Ireland.
