The man accused of mailing letters contaminated with the deadly poison ricin to the president says he's innocent.

Paul Kevin Curtis appeared in a federal courtroom in Oxford, Mississippi on Thursday.

Curtis is sometimes an Elvis impersonator.

He wore shackles and a Johnny Cash T-shirt in court.

His lawyer said Curtis "maintains 100 percent that he did not do this."

She said she knows him and his family and that it is hard for her to believe the charges against him.

One neighbor in West Hill Subdivision said Curtis would sit on his porch and play guitar.

She said Curtis told her he was a trainer at the local YMCA.

"He seemed very nice. He didn't bother anyone. He'd sit outside and play his guitar, play with his fire pit. He never bothered anyone," she said.

Curtis's lawyer said she has not yet decided whether to ask for a hearing on whether Curtis is mentally competent to stand trial.
