BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The Tuscaloosa County School Board has named a new superintendent. After going into executive session at 8:20 a.m. on Thursday morning, board members returned about an hour later to announce Elizabeth Swinford to the position.

Swinford comes from the Vicksburg, Mississippi School system. The board would like for her to begin work on July 1.

Board member Mark Nelson says Swinford's experience as a superintendent and turning around failing schools made her stand out from the other candidates.

Swinford says she was actually headed to interview for the Lee County superintendent position when she learned she had gotten the Tuscaloosa County job. She says she withdrew her name from the candidacy for the Lee County job immediately.

As for moving to Alabama, Swinford says she became aware of the Alabama/Auburn rivalry while interviewing for her new position. She says she won't have a problem rooting for the Crimson Tide.

"I've lived in Louisiana. I lived in Baton Rouge. I have been to some LSU games, but I can roll Tide roll."

Swinford adds that she plans to lead Tuscaloosa schools based on data and what kids are interested in.
