Chelsea considers one cent sales tax hike

CHELSEA, AL (WBRC) -

The city of Chelsea is looking at raising its sales tax by one cent to help pay for a host of new projects.

The proposed tax hike would raise city sales tax from 3 to 4 percent, meaning shoppers would pay a total of 9 percent sales tax on anything they buy in Chelsea city limits.

Chelsea's mayor Earl Niven says the new funding would be used to buy and clear land for a new baseball complex and community center. It would also help pave a road to the new elementary school.

He says the city needs to keep up with its explosive growth.

"I think people that move to a fast-growing city like Chelsea, they expect you to have. We can't provide as a major city all of the facilities, but in order to get there you have to have a vision and you have to work to get there," Niven said.

The Chelsea city council will vote on the sales tax hike next month.
