Editorial: Boston Marathon bombing

The following is an editorial from FOX6 WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, first aired on Tuesday, April 16:

Considering the number of violent acts we've experienced in our country in the last several years I suppose I shouldn't have been surprised by the evil that showed its face in Boston yesterday. But I was. That any individual or group would be angry, sick or callous enough to detonate bombs in an environment where innocents, including children, are present is completely unfathomable.

What did not surprise me, however, was the immediate response of first responders and bystanders, who, without regard for their own safety, stepped in to help the injured. There are hundreds of stories speaking to the bravery and selflessness of those who chose to stay and help rather than heed the natural survival instinct to flee.

We had more than 100 Alabama runners in yesterday's Boston Marathon. We waited anxiously to hear that all of them were safe and would be coming home.

Every week, running enthusiasts from around the area gather in Homewood to run through the local neighborhoods. This Wednesday, April 17, from 4 to 8 pm, runners will gather in front of the Trak Shak in Homewood to give blood. We salute all of you for your generosity.

What those who would harm us don't understand is that though we may be diverse, we may argue among ourselves, but when we are attacked we come together as one. We are, first and foremost, Americans.
