BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

It's only the first week of a large construction project that has shut down a major stretch of I-20 but drivers are already feeling the strain.

One of the detours is Crestwood Boulevard and during rush hour traffic the congestion is described as bumper to bumper.

While some drivers say it's frustrating, some businesses along the route say they're glad to see the extra drivers.

"They can get their car cleaned, relax," Bobby LaPoint at Goo Goo Car Wash said. "Who wants to wait in traffic?"

The eastbound lanes of I-20 between I-59 and I-459 will be closed for about three months. Once work on that side of the interstate is completed, the westbound lanes will be shut down. Work on the whole project is slated to end in November.
