JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

A man who helped make history on the Jefferson County Commission has died.

Reuben Davis, along with former Commissioner Chris McNair, were the first African Americans on the county commission after being elected in 1997. Davis served only one term. Current Commissioner Sandra Little Brown made the announcement of Davis' death during the commission's committee meeting Tuesday.

"My heart goes out to the Davis family. Commissioner Davis was one of the first black commissioners. They opened the door such as myself. I stood on their shoulders," Brown said.

Davis died Sunday and his funeral will be at the Bethel Baptist Church Saturday, April 13 at 11 a.m.
